Tribute to KK

KK has a special place in the hearts of millions of his fans from all over the world. With his soothing voice, vast vocal range and versatile singing, he has charmed everyone. KK’s full name is Krishnakumar Kunnath. He was born on 23 August 1968 in Delhi. He has recorded more than 500 songs in Hindi and more than 200 songs in various regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati languages.

KK was a student of Mount St. Mary School, New Delhi. You will be amazed to know that he had not received any formal training in music. When he was in school he would listen to his mother’s Malayali songs recorded by his father on a small tape recorder. He used to hum his favorite song  “Mehbooba” from Sholay many times. He took singing seriously after his first public performance in school in 2nd standard. He began his career by singing for advertisement jingles, and in just 4 years he sang nearly about 3500 jingles in 11 different languages in his initial days. He admired Lesley for giving him his first jingle in Mumbai and considered him his mentor.

KK got noticed as a playback singer with the song ‘Tadap tadap’ from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, but this was not his first song. He made his debut in the film industry with the song  ‘Chhod aaye hum’. In this song, he got to sing only the first two lines. He received the national award for the song, “Tu Ashiqui hai” from the movie Jhankar beats in 2004. His alaap in the song "Dola re dola"  took the song to a completely different level. He was amongst the best Bollywood singers but he was underrated. He told once in an interview, that most of the time, after his performance, people would ask him about the original singers of the songs he had performed on stage. They would be shocked to know that he had sung all those popular songs originally. He admitted that his songs were more popular than him. He also felt bad that people don’t notice the singer’s name while listening to any song. It is just a matter of a few minutes.

KK’s all songs are loved by music lovers but his songs "Pal" and "Yaaron" are the most popular songs and are commonly used in school farewells even today. Singer Palash Sen said in Kapil Sharma's show, ''I Owe My Entire Career to KK''. KK was the top jingle singer in Delhi and when he left for Mumbai jingle composers started looking for a voice that would replace KK’s voice. Composers started calling Palash Sen for jingles and this is how his singing career began. It is hard to believe that KK is not present amongst us but his voice will always be loved by the present and future generations.

I’ve listed some of his melodies. Hope you like them.
